Become a Super Hero for Safety

SACs

General Assembly 2009!
Join BACCHUS at GA in Orlando, FL on November 5-8 to learn more about being a peer educator SUPER HERO. Registration, Call for Programs and Awards are all open.

It's time to gather together all the "Superheros for Health and Safety" at the premiere conference for peer educators and advisors.  You don't need super powers to get there, but you will feel the power of peer education by the time you depart after you take in all the learning, motivation, idea sharing and support that comes with this high energy meeting.

Take advantage of a tremendous selection of learning opportunities during the conference at 70+ educational sessions, 2 keynotes, and 6 featured health issue presentations. If you feel like you need some specialized trainings, you can also take advantage of the pre-conference CPE (Certified Peer Educator) Training or the free Advisor's College sessions.

There are many great opportunities for professionals, students and guests. At the Assembly, peer educators gain new ideas and strategies for their programming and awareness events.  Advisors learn how to make prevention efforts stronger on their campuses while supporting the students who make it happen. Our advisors come from many different areas of the campus but all join together to network and to learn from each other. As a student peer educator, whether your emphasis is alcohol abuse prevention, drug education, sexual responsibility, mental health, nutrition, sexual assault, violence prevention, tobacco prevention, or other health and safety issues, you will find program offerings and other peer education groups similar to yours to gain and share new ideas.

You can bring students and your advisor to learn and to share successes from your own campus. You can submit a program for presenting a breakout session at the conference. You can apply for national awards for a great program or to recognize the year-round efforts of your affiliate group, advisor, or an outstanding student. You can submit an alum for recognition. You can showcase your campus program in the exhibit area. You can share resources and recipes in the mocktail "BAC-tail" contest. You can learn of speakers and prevention resources in the exhibit area.

Its your Time to Shine: Become an SAC!

Students wishing to take an active role in the leadership of the BACCHUS Network may also run for positions on the Student Advisory Committee (SAC). The SAC works with the Student Trustees to build cohesion among affiliates, to gather information about affiliate activities for publication in regional and national BACCHUS materials, and to promote student interests in the actions of the Network.

There is one SAC representative elected to represent each of the twelve regional Areas. SAC members will be called to Denver during the early months of their terms for an expenses-paid training. Candidates must plan in advance to run and attend the informational meeting on Thursday night of the General Assembly. Prospective candidates will fill out an application on Thursday night of the General Assembly and be allowed a two-minute speech at the area meeting Friday afternoon prior to election proceedings.

Candidates must maintain full-time campus undergraduate status during their term of office from November of 2009 to November of 2010 and be a member of a recognized BACCHUS affiliated peer education group.

If you wish to run for SAC and cannot attend General Assembly, you must submit a complete nomination package to be received in the National Office by Monday, October 19, 2009.

This nomination must include:
  • a letter of intent of no more than three pages
  • a letter from your advisor pledging support in the event of your election
  • a clear photograph for display at the General Assembly
  • a resume including peer education related service
This package is not necessary if you will be attending the Assembly.

Candidates must also include their campus address, permanent address, phone number, year in school, and course of study. Candidates must be a full-time undergraduate at a campus and a member of a recognized BACCHUS affiliated peer education group.

If you don't know your Student Trustees or SAC member, call the National Office at 303.871.0901, or check our web site at www.bacchusnetwork.org.

From Our Student Trustees
08 Advisor Conference You will hear General Assembly be promoted as an opportunity to learn, meet other peer educators, and rejuvenate you passion for peer education.  It is, and so much more!

Another opportunity that is overlooked by many peer educators at General Assembly is the chance to give a presentation.  This is a perfect opportunity to represent your school, learn more about a topic, and push yourself to a new experience.

Remember the premise of peer education: we love learning from one another!   Everyone brings their A-game to General Assembly, and from our experiences of presenting at past GAs, this just makes you want to work that much harder to give an awesome presentation.

The final result?  A great sense of accomplishment, a new niche of expertise, and a great resume builder!  You can present on an event that has been particularly successful on your campus, put a new spin on an old topic, or educate us on a new topic that you think is important.

BACCHUS would not be successful if we were not all constantly sharing ideas, so we look forward to hearing yours in November!  Remember: Call for programs are due by Monday, September 21.
Area Consultant's Corner
2009conferencelogoIt is with mixed emotions that I write this last column for you as Area 10 Consultant. For those of you aren't aware, I have accepted a new position with Northwestern University in the Chicago area, which I will begin in mid-October.

As much as look forward to this new opportunity, I am sad to be leaving my wonderful New England colleagues behind. But geography dictates that I step down from being an Area Consultant -- unless Illinois has suddenly become part of Area 10 in recent days!

I've had a fantastic experience serving first as a State Coordinator and now as Area Consultant for BACCHUS and will miss the almost daily interactions it afforded me with colleagues across the area. I will still be part of the BACCHUS family, however -- I'm involved in a couple other "behind the scenes" projects with the organization that contribute to peer education and advisor support.

If any advisors are interested in learning more about volunteering as an Area Consultant, I encourage you to contact Janet Cox (janet@baccchusnetwork.org) at the National Office.  Janet can provide you with a position description and application, as well as outline the obligations for the Area Consultant. She is taking applications through October 2, 2009.

Until the time that my successor is named, please utilize your State Coordinators (listed below) as contact people for BACCHUS-related concerns.

Thank you again for your support and I wish you all the best in continued success with your peer education efforts!

Be well...
