| Smoking and Marijuana |

Wanna hear one of the biggest myths around? It's that smoking marijuana isn't harmful. Wrong! There are consequences and there is proof. A 1998 study conducted at the University of California revealed some pretty nasty results. After assessing the lung biopsies of regular marijuana smokers, researchers found that half of them had 8 of the 10 cellular abnormalities that indicate precancerous changes in the lungs.

Hey Area 11,
Thanks to everyone who made it to our Area 11 conference on February 28! For everyone who wasn't there, we had a great time at the University of Scranton and had lots of fabulous presenters. The morning began with breakfast and a word from our opening keynote speaker, Richard Lucey, Jr. from the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention. We also had the chance to hear from Dr. Linda Hancock from Virginia Commonwealth University as our lunch keynote speaker. During the day there were over 20 breakout sessions run by students, advisors, and other professionals. The conference was a huge success and I look forward to seeing everyone there again next year!
Sincerely,
Kylie Morris, Area 11 SAC

Fundraising 101
We all know that the economy is a little tight right now. Below are 10 new, innovative ideas groups can begin to do to fundraise their way to General Assembly in November.
1. Non-Bake Bake sale - Sell vegetables and fruit instead of typical deserts. This event works perfects with National Nutrition Month. 2. Hand massage - Provide hand massages to students during stressful times of the semester (midterms and finals for example) and ask for donations. Besides raising money, your help reduce stress! 3. Duck tape a Professor/Advisor- This idea is actually from General Assembly. The idea is if an amount of money is raised the VOLUNTEER professor/advisor would be duct taped to a wall for a period of time. 4. Shave a Professor/Advisor - Again, if an amount of money is raised, publically shave the head of a VOLUNTEER professor/advisor. If no one is willing to have their head shaved, you could always throw a pie of whipped cream in his/her face! 5. Dance Night- Try to DJ who will volunteer and a public location and you're golden! You can provide refreshments too (soda and pretzels). 6. Karaoke Night- Host a karaoke night on campus. Try to get professors involved - the students will definitely come to see their favorite professor sing along with Madonna! 7. Mr. (insert school's name) Man - Have a campus wide competition for a man who truly encompasses healthy relationships. Men should be nominated for this event where they will be asked questions pertaining to certain situations experienced in relationships. The winner gets the fame and a cool prize. Raise money by charging admittance and not only will your organization be finically set, your school will have successfully completed a healthy relationship program! 8. Rummage Sale - This classic method to raise money is cheap, easy to plan, and highly effective! 9. Rent - A - Puppy - Contact a local Humane Society and explain the "Pet Therapy" event and purpose. Ask them to bring a bunch of puppies to borrow for the day and have students "rent" a puppy for 15 to 30 minutes at the event for a low price. It is a great way to raise money for the Humane Society (they can receive half the profit for instance) and for your group. Make sure to check campus policy regarding pets before planning the event! 10. Night of Chocolate - For the mere price of $5, students will be able to indulge in Chocolate milk, hot chocolate, chocolate ice cream, chocolate cookies, chocolate cover pretzels, chocolate cake, brownies, and chocolate fondue with strawberries, bananas, marshmallows, and more. Remember, there are many other ideas online, including selling items (cookie dough), and the standard fundraising raffles, penny wars, car washes, bake sales, and candy grams. Make sure to watch out for hidden costs (purchasing goods) associated with some fundraising activities - you don't want to put more money into the event than you get out! Have goals, solicit donations, recruit volunteers, and have fun. Good luck and we'll see you at General Assembly! |
