Area 12 Regional Conference Update!!
Mark Freeman
Student Advisory Committee

Within my three years of being a Peer Health Educator, Regional Conference has always held some of my favorite memories, and not just because it gets me away from the still freezing temperatures of the Appalachian Mountains of late March!

In 2007, at the University of Virginia, in Charlottesville, Virginia, I can still remember NC A&T starting a highly energetic cheer that got all the affiliates involved. It went a little something like this: Table number one, number one number one, table number one where you at  number two! And after a few errors it eventually made it's way through to all TWELVE tables.

And last year at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virgina, we got a cheer competition like none of us had ever seen before! With Virginia Commonwealth University breaking out some gymnastic cheers and East Carolina University hosting there very own food fight!

This year the BACCHUS Area 12 Regional Conference is being held at the University of North Carolina: Wilmington on March 27 and 28th.

Not only are Regional Conferences a great opportunity for you to network and meeting new people to share ideas with, it's also a great opportunity to show others what it is that you're doing on your very own campus! BACCHUS Conferences offer you as an affiliate to participate and shows others you passion and success. If you have you just have a great and innovative way of doing an activity/event, create it into a workshop! Or if you already have a great educational program, fill out a program proposal! You'll be able to share your great success and ideas with others. To download a program proposal click here.

But maybe you for whatever reason, cannot, or would rather not present your program or event ideas at the conference. That's fine, you also have the opportunity to submit them for Awards! Every year at Regional Conference we offer 6 awards in the following categories:
  • Outstanding Network Affiliate
  • Outstanding Program/Event
  • Outstanding Extended Program/Event
  • Outstanding Student Leader
  • Outstanding Advisor
  • Outstanding Alumnus
And in the past we've had so many great nominatons written to us that we've given out two awards for some categories. Receiving an award is a great way to get recognition for allt he hard work that you've been doing on your campus and it only takes a few minutes to fill out an award nomination form. To download the award nomination form just click here.

Now, keep in mind, I've barley touched the surface of things offered at this years Regional Conference! To learn some more information about this years conference, look at the brochure by viewing a pdf version of it here.

So, we've covered a lot of the basics being offered at conference, now you're probably wondering: how much and where will I stay? Well, registration is offered at $50 for the Early-Bird special and a hotel can be found under the "BACCHUS Area 12 Conference block" for as little as $58.65 (+tax) a night!

Okay, now, this is all fine and dandy, but when is everything due? Well here's a little deadline-time line for you!
  • February 6th Program Proposals
  • February 20th Early-Bird Registration
  • February 27th Award Nominations
  • February 27th Hotel Reservations
  • February 27th Final Registration
Hope to see you at UNCW on March 27th! =]

The peer educators of UNC Wilmington invite you to come to our shores and join in on the Peerifying process!  So, what exactly is Peerification?  The UNCW peers define Peerification as the process of inspiring peer educators to share a wave of knowledge as student leaders.

Our goals for this Regional Conference are to increase knowledge, collect innovative program ideas, find new inspiration and learn techniques to become better peer educators.

Showcase your campus, inspire your peers, and share your knowledge!  Submit a program proposal to present at the conference and nominate your best program, peer educator, or advisor for an award!

For info about the conference, go to www.uncw.edu/crossroads and click on the "BACCHUS & GAMMA Area 12 Conference Info" link on the right.

Program proposals are due Feb. 6th and Award nominations are due Feb. 27th.  We look forward to sharing ideas and developing new relationships with you this March!
East Carolina University Health PIRATES work for a Cure
Georgia Childs
Area Consultant

Originally intended to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the East Carolina University Healthy PIRATES planned and implemented the first annual  "peace.love.pirates.cure" Cancer Awareness Event on October 1, 2008.

They worked with many organizations on and off campus collaborate with this event. "peace.love.pirates.cure"  was a huge success and brought over 700 students to the fair to learn about all types of cancer, from breast and testicular, to colon, ovarian, lung and cervical. There was a Tree of Hope that let participants write a name of a loved one who had survived or succumbed to cancer that they wanted to honor or remember.

Students were given a t-shirt after participating in the event and they had a chance to win other great prizes from the Susan G. Komen foundation, Campus Wellness Department, and other organizations. The event was such a success that plans are already underway for October 2009. Susan G. Komen will be bringing their large trailer called "Big Pink" with all types of information about Breast Cancer.

The Healthy PIRATES encourage you to visit the site and invite them to come to your campus - all free of charge to your university!!! www.komen.org

What Happened in at General Assembly?
Mark Freeman
Student Advisory Committee

So, how can I put this? General Assembly in Columbus, Ohio absolutely BLEW MY MIND! And putting aside the great memories of breakout sessions, presenting, the blackout, dancing and the time spent meeting new people, Area 12 represented like never before!

Area 12 definitely represented its talents and passions for Peer Health Education. We as a collective area presented five breakout sessions and were awarded eight different awards! That's 25%, ONE FOURTH, of the awards that were offered at General Assembly!

The programs presented were:

  • "Kicking Butts 25 Feet at a Time" by the University of North Carolina, Wilmington
  • "Bite the Bug Before It Bites You!"  by the University of North Carolina, Wilmington

Spring Break Saftey
Aimee Hourigan
North Carolina State Coordinator

Spring Break has become a week idealized by heavy drinking and partying.  While most students choose to go home, work, or do community service over the break, some want the experience they have seen glamorized in movies and television.  Here are a few ideas to prepare for a safe and fun trip.

First, use a reputable travel agency.  Some companies target students knowing that many will not do research.  Be skeptical about solicitations that sound too good to be true.  Read the fine print on "all-inclusive" offers that may only provide one meal per day or encourage extreme drinking.  Learn as much as you can about your destination, including local laws and things to do beyond the parties.

Check out your cell phone service.  If your phone won't work internationally, many phone service providers allow temporary calling plan changes, allowing you to communicate while traveling.  Designate a time to talk to your parents during the week just to check in.  Just in case of emergencies, give your parents the phone number to the hotel/condo/villa where you are staying.

Be sure to pack sunscreen, lip balm, and other small sun necessities and use these products throughout the day.  Drinking alcohol in the sun can increase dehydration.  Drink water throughout the day and take care of your body.

On your campus, discuss confrontation skills so that friends can take care of each other when they find themselves in a dangerous situation.  Talk about using the buddy system and always staying with a group of friends.  Encourage your friends to know their personal drinking limits and how to prevent negative consequences on their trip.  Be blunt - what is our plan to avoid the "Girls Gone Wild" scenario?

This break week can help students survive the stress of spring semester.  Help your friends to plan a safe and relaxing trip.  For more tips and information, check out ww.friendsdrivesober.org and www.cdc.gov/women/owh/springbreak/

Just like you are a resource for credible health information on your campus your Student Advisory Committee Representative, also known as a S.A.C., is resource for you in your affiliate role. All twelve S.A.C.'s were trained in Denver mid January. During the training they learned about their new role, The BACCHUS Network organization, and created their own SMART goals. SMART goals are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely.

Specific
  • The goal should be focused and target a detail within the larger picture
Measurable
  • The goal should include a quantitative number that evaluates improvement
Attainable
  • The goal should have an end result that can be reached
Realistic
  • The goal should be practical; it should push you but should be within your reach
Timely
  • The goal should include a deadline as to when you want to achieve it
Think about creating your own SMART goals this quarter or semester and realize all you do! If you have any questions email your S.A.C.

The S.A.C. is apart of your area team. Your area team volunteers are there because they believe in the importance of health education. They are comprised of the Area Consultant, State Coordinators, and the Student Advisory Committee Representative.

You don't need to have a question to send us an email we would love to hear about your successful events, unique parts of your program, or helpful tips to make your experience more meaningful. If they cannot answer your question then they can find an answer for you. We look forward to a great year serving you!
