Is your bat mobile revved up for the journey to Orlando? Are your spidy senses tingling for the latest information on health and safety issues?

No, I'm not talking about a new movie that's coming out! Super Heroes for  Health and Safety is this years theme for General Assembly, and deadlines for the conference are coming up fast!

Did you forget to submit a program proposal on Monday? Guess what?
The deadline for program submission has been extended to Friday, September 25th. So if you were thinking about doing it, hurry! You have a second chance!

Here's a quick glance at the deadlines that are coming up and some links to take you where you need to go!

Call for programs
Due: Friday, September 25

Got a great program, or do things in a unique way at your campus? Than submit a program proposal! Highlight the great things you do on your campus and showcase your success with others!

Registration
Due: before Tuesday, October 13

Yes, prices aren't the cheapest in the world. But considering that registration covers your meals for your conference, it helps pays for all the rooms and space that's used for the conference (and there's a lot!), and there aren't any extra charges in there, it's actually a steal!

Hotels
Due: before Tuesday, October 13

You can get a discounted room in the hotel we'll be doing all of our sessions for the conference. The cool thing? You can book three days before the conference begins, and three days after the conference is over and keep the same discounted room rate! Why not see Orlando while you're already there!?

Award Submission
Due: Monday, October 19

Sometimes, it's hard to talk about yourself and all the great things your group does, but this is your time to shine! You can submit awards for an outstanding program you put on, your network as a whole, and the amazing job you've done, or you can recognize the fabulous job a student your advisor or an alumni has made.

I would strongly suggest writing an award for your advisor, after all, many of us wouldn't be here reading this if it wasn't for them!

All the categories you can submit an award nomination for are:
  • Outstanding Prevention Program in
    • Alcohol Abuse/Impaired Driving
    • Tobacco
    • Mental Health
    • Sexual Health
    • Personal Safety
    • Fitness and Nutrition
    • Illegal Drug/Drug Misuse
    • Peer Ed. Recruitment Campaign
    • Creative Publicity for an Event
    • Successful Fundraiser
  • Outstanding Network Affiliate
  • Outstanding Student Leader
  • Outstanding Advisor
  • Outstanding Alumni
*NOTE: You do NOT have to be present at General Assembly to win an award. Last year Area 12 did very in applying for awards, and we were recognized by having a very large number of the awards given out at General Assembly! Let's keep that streak going!

BAC-Tail Contest
Due: Starts Wednesday, October 21

Do you make BAC-Tails or serve some other variation of a non-alcoholic cocktail on your campus? Think you've got a unique recipe that is simply the best! Well bring your supplies and we'll see what you've got!

School Exhibit Table
Due: Starts Wednesday, October 21

Do you enjoy making displays? Do you already have a great display about a topic your group just loved exploring for about? Want to make a whole new exhibit centered around this year's conference theme? Then sign up and see what happens! Prizes given to the top three displays!

SAC 2009

On a more personal note though: come General Assembly, I will have completed my second year on the Student Advisory Committee representing Area 12, and I can't express everything it's done for me in this newsletter. I could go on for days, but because I'm kind of a list freak, I'll give you a snap shot for what it's done for me:
  • Allowed me to grow as a leader, a communicator, friend and a Peer Educator
  • Helped me realized my love and excitement of Health issues
  • Allowed me to network with future colleagues in the field I want to pursue
  • Gave me practical skills and knowledge I've been able to apply in other areas of my life
  • Has made me a better group worker
And that's just to name five off the top of my head, I could go on and on. If you're interested in learning more:
Also, when at General Assembly, there is a MANDATORY informational meeting Thursday night. Room location and time will be listed in your program booklets, and you should see members of the Student Advisory Committee around to answer any questions you have.

If you're the least bit interested here's my advice: if you don't even try, you'll never know what possibilities are out there. Just ask if you have any questions! =]
The possibilities are endless... at General Assembly

You will hear General Assembly be promoted as an opportunity to learn, meet other peer educators, and rejuvenate you passion for peer education.  It is, and so much more!  Another opportunity that is overlooked by many peer educators at General Assembly is the chance to give a presentation!

This is a perfect opportunity to represent your school, learn more about a topic, and push yourself to a new experience.  Remember the premise of peer education: we love learning from one another!

Everyone brings their A-game to General Assembly, and from our experiences of presenting at past GAs, this just makes you want to work that much harder to give an awesome presentation.  The final result?  A great sense of accomplishment, a new niche of expertise, and a great resume builder!

You can present on an event that has been particularly successful on your campus, put a new spin on an old topic, or educate us on a new topic that you think is important.  BACCHUS would not be successful if we were not all constantly sharing ideas, so we look forward to hearing yours in November!

Remember: Call for programs are due by Friday, September 25th!
