Greetings!
Chance Dorland Bio Pic

As I sit down and decide how to say hello without saying too much, or too little, I think the simplest would be the best. Hi, I'm Chance Dorland, your Area 10 Student Advisory Committee member. I've spent my entire pre-college life in rural Iowa and now attend Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. At Emerson, I have been very active in radio and television. I hope to one day have an FM talk show in California. This is my first year of involvement with The BACCHUS Network and I could not be happier with the connections I have made through this work. No one should be limited on options simply because they don't have a foot in the door, so I ask you to use The BACCHUS Network and myself to help you learn, grow, and network the multiple islands of peer education. Pass the Area 10 Newsletter along to friends, colleagues, and everyone; my only goal this year is to find that "Chance Dorland" on each campus who wants to be involved but doesn't know it yet.

This is my purpose. Please take advantage of all BACCHUS has to offer.

-Chance Dorland

In a little more than a month (March 31st-April1st), our Area 10 Spring Conference, “Among the Stars”, will be taking place. University of Maine Orono will be our host this year as we head up the East Coast to lobster country.

If you have not attended an Area 10 Conference, some things to look forward to:
  • Opening Speaker Sandy Caron of the University of Maine
  • Student Advisory Committee member address
  • Many Breakout Sessions on a wide variety of health and peer education/leadership issues
  • Keynote speaker Elaine Penn (pictured)
  • Induction of this year's Outstanding Peer Educator and Outstanding Advisor into the Peer Education Hall of Fame
  • Award presentation for Outstanding Program
  • Certified Peer Educator (CPE) Training
  • and endless opportunities to network with peer educators and advisors from other campuses in New England!

To learn more about registering for the Area 10 Spring Conference, how your peer education group can submit a proposal for a breakout session, and to nominate a peer educator or advisor into the Peer Education Hall of Fame, click on the link below.

Remember: The deadline for conference registration, program proposals and award nominations is Friday, March 2, 2007!!!!

Twenty-two peer educators and advisors from Area 10 attended General Assembly in Anaheim, CA and it was a blast! I enjoyed meeting the "Dating Doctor" Dave Coleman, meeting students from across the entire country (yes, even my home of Iowa), and the California sun.

I look forward to this year's General Assembly in Atlanta, Georgia. If your peer education group was unable to to make it across the country last November, this year should be a bit easier on the luggage and your budget. See you there!

HOPE Pajamboree 2
H.O.P.E. (Healthy Options Peer Educators) of Emerson College has had a busy year so far. Last semester, we developed an alcohol awareness program which we delivered to Freshman students during their floor meetings. Using some of the techniques we learned at BACCHUS, we facilitated discussion and played some games that helped them reevaluate their own attitudes towards alcohol. We also hosted our 3rd Annual Holiday Pajamboree, as part of our "Alcohol Alternative Nights". Encouraged to attend wearing pajamas, guests at the Pajamboree decorated cookies, made gingerbread houses, watching holiday movies, and made arts and crafts. It was a great way for everyone to de-stress just before finals.

So far this semester, we have been able to assist in Emerson's "Free for the Weekend", a weekend where students pledge to be free of all substances, and instead get to attend a variety of fun events. We are also currently working on a "Smoking Blog" project, where we have invited several students who are interested in quitting smoking to share their experiences through an online blog which HOPE has set up. We are really excited about this new way of trying to reach the smokers on our campus. Finally, we have also hosted a few events as part of "National Condom Awareness Week", including a discussion on the movie "Kids" and a Safe Sex Olympics. As you can see, we are constantly drawing on our experiences from BACCHUS to make our program stronger!

Starry Night
A little boy was having difficulty lifting a heavy stone. His father came along just then. Noting the boy’s failure, he asked, "Are you using all your strength?"

"Yes, I am," the little boy said impatiently.

"No, you are not," the father answered. "I am right here just waiting, and you haven’t asked me to help you."

Safe Spring Break 2007
Safe Spring Break is a great opportunity for you to get your peers ready for all the fun of spring break while encouraging them to make positive choices for their own health as well as the safety of their friends. It is a chance for you to do what peer educators and health and wellness offices do best: being positive and supportive about healthy decision-making, while at the same time pointing out some of the real dangers and risks that need to be addressed.

Watch your mailbox for your Safe Spring Break Campaign kit to arrive soon! The KNOW Boundaries campaign manual is packed full of ideas for addressing spring break safety on your campus, whether your focus is travel safety, impaired driving prevention, sexual health or another related issue. Check it out!
Kyle & Sam, Student Trustees
The spring season represents a time of great scholastic and extracurricular productivity within the academic community. With one month of winter left and Area Conferences in the near future, on behalf of the Student Advisory Committee and all of the professionals and volunteers of The BACCHUS network, we would like to extend our best wishes for a successful second semester.

The Student Advisory Committee convened in Denver during winter recess. Following a very productive summit, we are confident that this year will be marked by great progress.

Each spring our 12 areas host a regional conference. Area conferences serve as an open forum for the exchange of a diverse collection of ideas and perspectives on a wide variety of subjects relevant to the causes of network-affiliated organizations. The best and brightest from institutions across your regions will be in attendance. It is our hope that you and your fellow peers will be able to participate in this unique learning experience. If you have an event on your campus that prevents your attendance at your own area conference, you might consider another area conference nearby.

Sexual Responsibility Week 2007 materials are now available. As has been the case for years, BACCHUS is a leader in promoting student-friendly sexual health information, the empowerment of abstinence as a healthy choice, and the connections between alcohol abuse and unhealthy sexual decisions. The purpose of the week is to provide all of our affiliates with a highly visible spark for what we hope is a year round commitment to sexual health issues and programming in your campus community.

Many people like to create their own Sexual Responsibility Week in February around Valentine’s Day. Some people like to do their sexual health awareness on the week before Spring Break. Others find it difficult to conduct an entire week of sexual health events, but instead try to do a day or two of programming. As always, we leave it to our affiliates to decide what is best for them.

The opportunities to become more involved in The BACCHUS Network are endless, we hope that you’ll seek them out and continue to serve as change agents within your campus community.

Best,

Kyle B. Ali and Sam Filkins
BACCHUS Student Trustees
