exciting spring break, finished finals strong , AND
is getting ready for a well deserved summer. In the mean

Area
8 /Area 9 Conference a success!
First
and foremost I would like to thank everyone that
attended this years conference, It was a great time to
enjoy the benefits of the Bacchus Network and greet with
our fellow peer educators.
The Conference was held on the campus of Clemson in
Clemson, South Carolina on February 15th & 16th.
Keynote speakers included Randy
Haveson, a speaker that has impacted the lives
of young adults on issues ranging from substance abuse
to self image. And Shawn Decker & Gwenn
Barringer spoke on how HIV has affected their
relationship in negative and positive ways. The
Conference also included many workshops and Breakout
sessions throughout the day as well as a Presidents
round table session with Mr. Drew Hunter
President and CEO of the Bacchus
Network.

8 Award Winners.
Congratulations to everyone in
Area 8 for making our Area strong. Even though Area 8 is
one of the smallest in our network, the Students and
Advisors are Truly all deserving of an award.
Outstanding Program - The
outstanding program for area 8 was awarded to
Jacksonville State University for the sixth year in a
row for their program "Alcohol Awareness Week" a
week long event put on by the students and faculty
showing the dangers of alcohol abuse. These events
include Mocktails, numerous info is given away and use
of the famous drunken goggles.
Outstanding Advisor-
The outstanding advisor from Area 8 was awarded
to Mr. Adam Green From Jacksonville State University.
Mr. Green was said to be an inspiration and a "backbone"
of the Peer Educators at JSU. The one that nominated Mr.
Green said he brought an enjoyable experience to
everyone he came in contact with.
Outstanding Student -
The outstanding student in area 8 was awarded
to Sara Barowka from Rhodes College. Sarah was described
as a very intricate part of the Peer Education Group at
Rhodes College. She worked single handed for months to
bring new programs to to her college and succeeded

Confirmed
Presenters: Jennifer Bauerle, Ph.D.,
is Director of the National Social Norms Institute at
the University of Virginia, from which she received her
doctorate in program evaluation.
Alan Berkowitz, Ph.D., is
an independent consultant and one of the original
theorists of the social norms approach to health
promotion.
Michael Haines, M.S., is
the Director of the National Social Norms Resource
Center. Mr. Haines designed the first successful
implementation of the social norms approach
at Northern Illinois University.
Linda Hancock, Ph.D., is
the Assistant Director for the Office of Health
Promotion at Virginia Commonwealth University, where
she has implemented social norms projects that have
been effective in preventing tobacco use and reducing
misperceptions about alcohol use.
Drew Hunter, M.P.A., is
President/CEO of The BACCHUS Network. He and his staff
work with student leaders and peer educators at
college campuses across the nation to use social
norms strategies to enhance the health and safety of
students.
H. Wesley Perkins, Ph.D.,
is a professor of sociology at Hobart and William Smith
Colleges, where he also serves as the Director of
the Alcohol Education Project. Dr. Perkins is one of the
pioneer theorists and leading proponents of the social
norms approach to health promotion.
James Turner, M.D., is
Executive Director of both Student Health and the
National Social Norms Institute, as well as Professor
of Clinical Internal Medicine at the University
of Virginia.
Dennis P. Martell, Ph.D.,
is Coordinator of Health Education at Olin Health Center
at Michigan State University, where he serves as
coordinator for research and policy for the health
education department. He is co-principal investigator on
a social norms grant focused on celebratory drinking.
He co-authored the award-winning book,
Effective Health Risk Messages, Sage Publishing, 2001
and worked with the B.R.A.D (Be Responsible About
Drinking) foundation to develop the 21st Birthday Card.
Clayton Neighbors Ph.D.,
is Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry
and Behavioral Sciences at the University of
Washington. He is currently the
Principle Investigator on a 5-year study, "Social
Norms and Alcohol Prevention (SNAP)", funded by the
National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and
Alcoholism. | |
