Hey Area
Seven!
What is new Area Seven?! Hope all the
students out there are finishing the school year strong
with their studies and also their peer eduacation
programming!
Things definitely are coming to an end here at
Bowling Green State University, but with an end comes a
new beginning!
As the end of the school year approaches, I
encourage everyone to take a moment and reflect on their
year in peer education. What are some great
accomplishments you have had with peer education? Any
new programming ideas? Great new presentations? Old
presentations given a new extra zing? This is also a
great time to think about what you want to accomplish
next year with your program. Is there anything that
didn't work well you would like to improve on in the
future?
I know here at BGSU we are trying a lot of new
ideas with our peer education program, which is a little
scary but also incredibly exciting! I just want to
remind everyone we are student LEADERS. We can do a lot
with our programs and accomplish a lot of great goals.
Set your goals high and never underestimate your power
as a student.
I know it's been said, but we really are the
future. Take your role in peer education and really step
up as a student leader on campus; you can make a
difference!
Wow, that was really inspirational for 1AM, go me.
Miss you all! Can't wait to see everyone at the
National Conference, which is in AREA SEVEN! Mark the
date, November 13-16th in Columbus Ohio!
PS - Random note, if you are a student and
your other student friends are NOT getting this FABULOUS
newsletter tell them to email me and I will add them
ASAP! The more students the better! Again, love you
all!

The Area
Seven Regional Conference was held on April
4th and 5th at Notre Dame
University. It was a great success and thanks must go
out to all those who helped plan the event.
One
highlight of the event was all the amazing speakers!
First was Carolyn Cornelison, who is actually a BACCHUS
Network alumni! She stressed the importance of peer
education and how it can effectively help students
inform other students on making healthy choices. Another
great keynote speaker was Harlan Cohen, the author of
"The Naked Roommate: And 107 Other Issues You Might Run
Into in College." Cohen is a singer, songwriter and
speaker. He talked a lot about dating, healthy
relationships and taking risks. Check out either of his
websites, www.helpmeharlan.com or
www.thenakedroommate.com. Also,
David "Hajii" Otto talked about stress and learning to
live and enjoy life. To wrap up the conference Michael
Gershe spoke and shared a personal part of his life. He
talked about when he was a child and his mother died in
a drunken driving accident. His mix of comedy and
heartfelt message really touched everyone at the
conference.
Besides
the many amazing keynote speakers at the event, there
were an array of interesting break out sessions.
Students from Miami of Ohio, Bowling Green State
University, Easter Kentucky, Michigan State, Notre Dame,
Ohio University, and Baldin-Wallace all presented on
different health topics. Topics in the break out
sessions ranged from nutrition to marijuana,
recruitment and training of peer educators. And many
more!
Overall ,Area Seven Regional Conference: Peer
Education Under the Dome was a great learning and
networking experience for all! Check out the Area Seven
website for updates on winners of the different Area
Seven awards!

Tara Daniels,
Student Trustee
According to Paul J.
Wooley's article in The Washington Post, a yearbook filled with the
photos of people killed in traffic accidents in one year
would total 3,500 pages, squeezing in 12 pictures per
page.
Traffic fatalities are the leading cause of death for
people age 3 to 33. That's why National
Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS) is promoting May
as National Youth Traffic Safety Month. In
order to get states to sign onto this call for putting
youth traffic safety on the agenda, BACCHUS worked
wtih NOYS to launch www.signforsafety.org.
This website allows people across the nation to sign a
petition supporting National Youth Traffic
Safety Month that will be sent to each of the
governor's offices in all 50 states.
Get your campus involved in this nationwide
initiative! Students can visit the website and
sign the petition in a manner of
minutes. Moreover, in support of the
National Youth Traffic Safety Month,
All-State is offering fifty $1,000 grants to youth
organizations for well-developed projects promoting
traffic safety among your peers. NOYS even
provides a toolkit with great hints. Incorporate
Sign for Safety into your project!
How peer
educators can promote Sign for Safety across their
campuses:
- blackboard
blitz (writing the website on blackboards and
dry-erase boards across your campus)
- tabling
with brochures and a laptop open to signforsafety.org
(or, use an old fashioned paper petition and let
everyone know you're logging their names online)
- PSAs on
your campus radiostation (simply contact area8sac@bacchusnetwork.org to get
written and audio PSAs)
- join
the facebook global group "Sign for Safety" and invite
all of your friends
- an
all-campus e-mail with the link
Wouldn't it be amazing to be a part of having your
governor proclaim May National Youth Traffic Safety
Month? The petition
is available through April 23, so get
going! |

Tobacco use is responsible for one in every five
deaths in the United States each year, according to
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data.
And with more than 45 million Americans currently
smoking cigarettes, tobacco use is also the leading
preventable cause of death in this country.
CDC, through its Office of Smoking and Health (OSH),
is the lead federal agency in a comprehensive,
broad-based approach to reducing tobacco use. OSH is
committed to ensuring that all people, especially those
at greater risk for health disparities related to
tobacco use, will achieve their optimal life span with
the best possible quality of health in every stage of

National Conference on the Social Norms
Approach |
|
| From The BACCHUS
Network website
The National Conference on the Social Norms Approach is
a unique and exciting opportunity to meet and interact
with some of the leading researchers and
practitioners in this rapidly expanding area of health
promotion. It is the only national conference devoted
entirely to this effective approach, and at no other
meeting will so many issues and questions about social
norms-from its past success to its future development-be
so intensively explored and discussed.
The conference
program is designed to provide a wide array of
presentations especially beneficial to practitioners,
administrators, an d stakeholders
in:
· High
Schools
· Colleges and
Universities
·
Community-Based Health and Service Agencies
New this year are
tiered break out tracks including beginner, intermediate
and advanced. The beginner track is geared towards first
time practitioners, new to the social norms approach.
Intermediate would be appropriate for audiences with
exposure to social norms, who have participated in or
led the implementation of a social norms
program. Advanced programs are designed for those who
have been active in the field for several years and have
designed and implemented social norms programs with
formal research/ evaluation
components.
